The Rockland County Haiti Relief Organization (RCHR) held its annual gala on April 5, celebrating “Keeping the Hope of Haiti Alive”. The evening honored several outstanding individuals and partners for their service, including Sister Valorie Lordi, OP.
RCHR, founded in 2008 in response to Haiti’s food crisis and natural disasters, is a coalition of Haitian-American NGOs and supporters providing direct emergency relief. Its mission focuses on health, food security, agriculture, and education—empowering individuals and rebuilding lives with resilience and hope. Programs include child education, medical aid, agricultural training, and mobile health clinics in underserved areas. rocklandcountyhaitirelief.org
Sister Valorie was recognized for her profound and enduring commitment to humanitarian work in Haiti. In the aftermath of the devastating 2010 earthquake, she traveled with Sisters of Charity to provide critical nursing care and support. Their mission laid the groundwork for long-term development, helping to establish wells, schools, clinics, food programs, housing, and camps for those displaced. Fluent in Spanish and conversant in Haitian Creole, Sister Valorie played a key role in leadership training programs that empowered local communities to rebuild with resilience and dignity. Through the Dominican Sisters’ Haiti Mission Circle of Life, she continues to be a steadfast advocate for justice, healing, and sustainable support for the Haitian people.
Other honorees included Marie Yolain Toms and Carmeline Timothee Torchon—recognized for their tireless advocacy and grassroots work—and the Town of Ramapo, applauded for its ongoing support.
New York State Attorney General Letitia “Tish” James delivered a stirring keynote on justice, solidarity, and the need to stand with Haiti in these challenging times.
In her acceptance, Sister Valorie shared:
“Whatever language we speak, we know we are one. Our love for the people of Haiti is beyond words, but we must speak and cry out for healing and hope... Although the world may turn away, we will not. Our Lady of Perpetual Hope is the patroness of Haiti, and we believe rebirth is possible when people of goodwill stand together.”
The gala served as a powerful reminder of what’s possible when communities unite in faith, justice, and love.
