Pastoral Ministry

A mission of love, compassion, and peace

In many ways, every ministry of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill is a pastoral ministry—one that pays attention to the whole person, including the spiritual well being of the individuals served.

Since Vatican II, our Sisters have served as parish administrators, pastoral associates, chaplains, campus ministers, spiritual directors, and retreat directors in parishes, hospitals, prisons, high schools, universities, senior residence facilities, and retreat centers.

Whether visiting with patients, praying with patients preparing for surgery, or providing spiritual and emotional support to doctors, nurses, and staff, our Sisters bring Christ’s love and peace in their ministry as hospital chaplains.

In parishes, Sisters make God’s presence visible in the lives of the community as pastoral associates, leaders of prayer, and parish nurses who visit the sick and frail elderly parishioners. Their ministry is deeply appreciated by those whom they serve—as witnessed in 2017 when Sisters Joan O’Leary, Peggy Gannon, and Elizabeth McLaughlin were chose to be the Grand Marshals of the Throggs Neck St. Patrick’s Day Parade!

As pastoral ministers, Sisters provide a listening ear, comfort, encouragement, and counsel to people in their local communities and in residences for the elderly.
