Sister Maureen O’Looney, OP

Sister Maureen O’Looney, OP passed away peacefully on Friday evening, January 6, in New York Hospital surrounded by her dear friends. Sr. Maureen Born in New York on June 4, 1945, the daughter of Julia O’Leary and Daniel O’Looney. She entered the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill on September 8, 1964 and received the name Sr. Anne Francis. She professed her first vows in 1966 and her final vows in 1972.

Sr. Maureen received a BA in English from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY; an MS in Psychology from Western Connecticut University, CT and an MSW in Social Work from Hunter College, NY. Sr. Maureen was a teacher, social worker and psychotherapist. She taught at St. Helena Elementary Bronx, NY (1967-70); and St. James, Carmel, NY (1970-75). She used her counseling skills in family services at Cardinal McCloskey (1977-78), as a child care worker at St. Mary’s Home in Syosset (1978-80) and as a social worker at Catholic Home Bureau (1980-86). She was Director of Siena Counseling Services in NY (1988-92), a therapist at New Beginnings Counseling Associates (1992-2008) and engaged in private practice as a therapist. During the past year and a half she worked in Marketing and Sales at Dowling Gardens right up until her illness and hospitalization.

We will remember Maureen for her positive outlook and determination to live life to the full. We are grateful for her forty-seven years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill and we ask the good Lord to give her peace among the company of the saints in heaven.
