Sister Anna Louisa Zummo, OP

Sister Anna Louisa Zummo, OP, of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on April 4, 2017 in Nyack Hospital, Nyack, NY.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on October 21, 1925, Maria Theresa (Mary) was the daughter of Anthony and Anna Puglisi Zummo. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on February 2, 1950 and received the name Sister Anna Louisa. She professed her first vows in 1951 and her final vows in 1956.

Sister Anna Louisa received a BS in English, Fordham University, New York in 1956 and her MS in Education from Queens College, New York in 1970.

Sister Anna Louisa served in the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn as a teacher in St. Helena School, Bronx (1951-1956), Sacred Heart School, Suffern (1956-1957), St. Martin of Tours School, Bronx (1957), St. Edmund School, Brooklyn (1957-1967). In 1967 Sr. Anna went to Aquinas High School where she taught until 2002. From 2002-2009 Sr. Anna remained at Aquinas as a substitute teacher before coming to Siena Hall in 2009.

Sister Anna Louisa is predeceased by her parents Anthony and Anna Puglisi Zummo and her siblings, Antoinette, Vincent, Elizabeth and Patrick. She is survived by her brother Anthony, sister-in-law Lucille, her sister Marge and many nephews and nieces.

Sister Anna Louisa was a kind and compassionate person. She served her God and congregation faithfully for over sixty-seven years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life and her goodness and we pray she be brought swiftly into the fullness of joy in the presence of the God she loved and so faithfully served. We will miss her presence among us.
