Sister Alice Madeline Smith, OP of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on November 21, 2018 in Siena Hall in Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY. She was 86 years old.

Born in New York, NY on December 29, 1931, Loretta was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Smith. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 1, 1951 and received the name Sister Alice Madeline. She professed her first vows in 1953 and her final vows in 1958.

Sister Alice Madeline received her BS in Education from Fordham University, Bronx, NY, 1958; her MA in Social Studies from St. John University, Queens, NY, 1963 and a Certificate in Theological Pastoral Education, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, New York, NY 1983.

Sister Alice Madeline taught in the Archdiocese of New York in St. Brendan School, Bronx, NY (1953-1958); then taught in the Syracuse Diocese in St. Mary’s School, Fulton, NY (1958-1960). Returning to New York, Sister Alice taught at Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, NY (1960-1967). Sr. Alice taught and was an administrative assistant at Msgr. Scanlan High School, Bronx, NY (1967-1981) For the next twenty years, Sister Alice served as Chaplain at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY (1981-2001). From 2001-2003, Sister Alice was on the staff of Dowling Gardens; Sparkill, NY then volunteered for many years in Siena Hall before retiring in 2015.

Sister Alice Madeline Smith is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Mary Smith, her brothers John, Joseph and Kenneth and her sister Annette Smith. She is survived by her sister, Teresa O’Neill, several nieces and nephews and their families, whom she dearly loved.

Sister Alice Madeline Smith was a kind and gentle woman who made a difference in the lives of those who knew her. She served her God and congregation faithfully for more than sixty-seven years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life and her goodness and we pray she may enjoy the fullness of life in the presence of the God she loved and so faithfully served. We will miss her presence among us.
