Sister Marie Angelique Dryden, OP

Sister Marie Angelique Dryden, OP died on July 12, 2019 in Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York. She was 84 years old.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on October 9, 1934, Mary Virginia was the daughter of Winton Francis and Marie Louise Karst.

She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1953 and received the name Sister Marie Angelique. She professed her first vows in 1955 and her final vows in 1960.

Sister Marie Angelique received her BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY, 1958; her MS in Speech and Drama from Catholic University, Washington, DC, 1973, and Certification in Preaching/Theology from Aquinas Institute and St. Paul VI Institute, St. Louis, MO, and Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, IL.

Sister Marie Angelique taught in the Archdiocese of New York in St. John Chrysostom School, Bronx, NY (1955-1957); St. Theresa School, Bronx, NY (1957-1958); Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia, NY (1974-1976); Rosary Academy, Sparkill, NY (1976-1977); St. Helena School, Bronx, NY (1979-1980); and Aquinas High School, Bronx, NY (1980-1984). Sister Marie Angelique taught in the Archdiocese of St. Louis in St. Kevin School (1961-1963); St. Dominic High School (1963-1973;1984-1988); and St. Simon School (1988-1992). Sister Marie Angelique served in Dominican Convent as a member of the Executive Team (1992-1994) and as Novice Director (1977-1979). She was involved in preaching ministry in parishes in the Archdiocese of New York from 1980-1983, in St. Louis from 1986-1990, and as a member of Our Lady of Hope House of Prayer from 1973-1974. Sister Marie Angelique was an administrative assistant in St. Louis, MO at the YWCA (1994-1996), Catholic Education Office (1996-2005), and Queen of Peace Center (2006-2007). Upon her retirement in 2008, Sister Marie Angelique was engaged in Community Service.

Sister Marie Angelique is predeceased by her parents Winton and Marie Karst Dryden and her siblings Joseph, Marie Louise, Malcolm, Louis, Winton, and Nancy. She is survived by her sister, Sister Frances Dryden, Sparkill, NY, Sister Constance Eleanor, RSCJ, Geraldine, Clotilda, Virginia, Carmelite, and Anne along with their spouses, nieces and nephews, grand and great nieces and nephews.

Sister Marie Angelique was a woman who made a difference in the lives of so many—students, parents, and colleagues. She was a preacher and teacher who served her God and congregation faithfully for more than 65 years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life in community, and we pray she will enjoy the fullness of the presence of the God. We will miss her presence among us.
