Sister Mary Casey, OP

Sister Mary Casey, OP died on February 18, 2019 in Siena Hall in Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY. She was 83 years old.

Born in New York, NY on January 31, 1936, Mary Veronica was the daughter of Michael and Delia Durcan Casey. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1954 and received the name Sister Michael Marie. She professed first vows in 1956 and final vows in 1961.

Sister Mary received her BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY, 1959, and her MS in Education from City College of New York, NY, 1974.

Sister Mary taught in the Archdiocese of New York in NY at St. Anthony School, Nanuet, NY (1956-1958); Sacred Heart School, Suffern, NY (1958-1961); and Our Lady of Mt Carmel School, Middletown, NY (1961-1962). Sister Mary taught in the Syracuse Diocese in St. Paul’s School, Norwich, NY (1962-1965) and returned to the Archdiocese of New York to Our Lady of Grace School, Bronx, NY (1965-1969).

From 1969-1972, Sister Mary taught in the Brooklyn Diocese in St. Teresa School, Woodside, NY. Sister Mary continued her educational ministry at the following schools in the Archdiocese of New York: St. Brendan’s School, Bronx, NY (1972-1991); Immaculate Conception School, Bronx, NY (1991-1992); and Annunciation School, Crestwood, NY (1992-1995). From 1995-2016 Sister Mary served as administrative assistant and medical secretary at Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY.

Sister Mary Casey was predeceased by her parents Michael and Delia Durcan Casey and brothers James, Walter, Joseph, Francis, and John. She is survived by loving nieces and nephews.

Sister Mary Casey was a kind and gentle woman who made a difference in the lives of those who were taught and or touched by her presence. She served her God and congregation faithfully for more than sixty-four years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life and her goodness, and we pray she may enjoy the fullness of life in the presence of the God she loved and so faithfully served.
