Sister Margaret Teahan, OP entered eternal life on March 28, 2021 in Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY. She was 89 years old.
Born in New York on September 23, 1931, Margaret Theresa was the daughter of John and Julia Hassett Teahan. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1951 and received the name Sister Thomas Marie. She professed her first vows in 1953 and final vows in 1958.
Sister Margaret received a BS in Education from Fordham University, Bronx, NY, 1958; an MS in School Psychology, St. John’s University, 1961; Certification as School Psychologist, St. John’s University, 1962; and Guidance/Counseling Certification, Fordham University, 1973. Sister Margaret also received a Certificate for Supervision of Social Workers from Columbia University.
Sister Margaret taught at St. Joseph School, Bronx, NY (1953-1957); St. Catherine of Siena School, NYC (1957-1961); St. Mary Magdalen School, Springfield Gardens, NY (1961-1962); Albertus Magnus HS, Bardonia, NY, teacher/counselor/psychologist (1962-1965); Aquinas HS, Bronx, NY, Director of Guidance and School Psychologist/Counselor, (1965-1974 and 1979-1988). Sister also served as Director of Family Counseling, Catholic Home Bureau, NYC (1974-1976); Family and Community Advocacy Life Center/Resurrection House, Bronx, NY (1976-1979); NYC Board of Education School Psychologist, Queens, NY (1988-1999); Volunteer at Good as New Thrift Shop, Queens, NY (1999-2001); Community Service, Rocky Creek Village (2001-2006); and Dominican Convent Development Office Assistant (2006-2011).
Sister Margaret is predeceased by her parents John and Julia Hassett Teahan, sisters Joan Briody (Jim), Helen Greene (Frank), brothers John (Midge), and Teddy. She is survived by loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and her beloved Dominican Sisters and Associates.
Sister Margaret Teahan used her gifts to heal the broken and made a difference in the lives of countless children and adults as teacher, counselor, and psychologist.
She proclaimed the congregation’s mission through her ministry for justice and reverence for all God’s creation for 70 years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life and commitment as she is welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence. Well done, good and faithful servant, Sister Margaret Teahan, OP. May you rest in peace!
