Housing for Seniors
Thorpe Village and Dowling Gardens
With vacant land available because of the closing of St. Agnes Home and School for Children, the Sisters wanted to use the 10-acre property in a socially responsible way. Due to a lack of affordable senior citizen housing in the local area, the Sisters chose to seek funding to build affordable senior housing, a work consistent with the mission of service to others. Their unwavering persistence led them to successfully secure funding and obtain the necessary town approvals for what would become a 200-apartment independent living senior housing community known as Thorpe Village, named for Mother Catherine Antoninus Thorpe, founder of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill. Since welcoming its first residents in August 1981, Thorpe Village has provided a home to over 1000 seniors, offering them social, recreational, and health maintenance programs as well as transportation to shopping and opportunities for community service.
Thorpe Village is a federally subsidized housing community for the elderly and handicapped located on a 10-acre site in Sparkill, N.Y. It is dedicated not only to providing shelter for its residents but also to creating an environment that enriches the quality of their lives. Thorpe Village is widely recognized for the variety and excellence of its social, recreational and cultural services and programs. Twenty of Thorpe Village's 200 one-bedroom apartments are equipped for the mobility impaired.
As residents of Thorpe Village aged, many could no longer live alone safely without additional services that Thorpe Village does not provide. The Sisters then envisioned another setting that would allow for frail but otherwise healthy seniors to maintain their independence in a non-medical setting. Named for Mother Dominic Dowling who purchased the Sparkill property in 1884, Dowling Gardens opened in February 1996 with 111 apartments built on a 5-acre site behind Dominican Convent in Sparkill, NY.
Dowling Gardens is much more than a senior living community; it is a place where friendships are formed, comfort and service are a priority, and where each day our residents experience the freedom to pursue personal interests. We feel that the elder years are meant to be enjoyed as fully as possible, and we strive to fulfill the needs and desires of each member of our community. We are fully committed to fostering an environment that encourages creativity, growth, and service.
