Sister Jeanne Deas OP of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on February 10, 2024 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent. Sister was 84 years old and in her 67th year of religious life.
Born in the Bronx, NY, on March 23, 1939, Jeanne was the daughter of Arthur and Anne Houlihan Deas. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8,1957 and received the name Sister Arthur Anne. She professed first vows in 1959 and final vows in 1964.
Sister Jeanne earned a BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY, 1962; an MS in Education from St. John University, New York, NY, 1971; and Certification in Administration from Manhattan College, Bronx, NY, 1978.
Sister Jeanne’s ministries included St. Agnes Home and School, Sparkill, NY (1959-1960); St. John Chrysostom School, Bronx, NY (1960-1962); St. Vito School, Mamaroneck, NY (1962-1967); St. Ann School, Bronx, NY (1967-1968); Holy Family School, Hicksville, NY (1968-1991) and Holy Family as parish minister from 1992-2008. She participated in a Wellsprings Sabbatical, Glen Falls, NY from 1991-1992. From 2008 until 2018, Sister Jeanne was a staff member in the Office of Financial Services, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY.
Sister Jeanne is predeceased by her parents Arthur and Anne Houlihan Deas and her sister, Sister Joanne Deas, OP. She is survived by her loving cousins, Dominican Sisters, Associates, and friends.
Sister Jeanne made a difference in the lives of everyone she encountered—as teacher, in parish and pastoral ministry, and in congregational service. She faithfully lived the mission of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, proclaiming the Word of God through ministry for justice and reverence for all creation. Well done, Sister Jeanne! May you be welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence.
