Dorothy Marie (Hummert) Tetreault of St. Louis, MO, born on September 15, 1936, passed away Friday, May 17, 2024, at the age of 87. She was the beloved wife of 44 years of James Tetreault and the loving mother of Ronald (Jenny) Tetreault. She was a Sister in the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill for 25 years, and desired a continued relationship with the Congregation and thus became an Associate (then known as Co-Member) in 1981.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents Alphonse and Apollonia Hummert, and her brother John Hummert. She is survived by her brothers Raymond (Mary Lee) Hummert, Robert (Barbara) Hummert, sister-in-law Betty Hummert, and brother-in-law Dennis Tetreault. She leaves behind dear nieces and nephews, Dominican Sisters and Associates, and many friends, including those at Mother of Perpetual Help Residence.
Dorothy loved children and spent 49 years teaching at Archdiocesan schools in St. Louis, including St. Marks/Martin De Porres, St. James the Greater, and St. Mary Magdalen. She delighted in talking about her many years of attending the Muny Theatre in Forest Park and her good times attending her son’s hockey games. Dorothy and her husband served as Eucharistic Ministers at College Church, bringing communion to many home-bound elderly, low-income, and ailing parishioners. She also provided transportation for those needing to travel for doctor appointments.
A long-time participant in civil rights actions such as the March on Selma, Dorothy was intent on living out the Sparkill Dominican mission of building the Reign of God through a ministry for justice. She once said, “As an Associate, I am revitalized to continue to accept the Dominican Sisters’ invitation and vision to reach out to others and bring the justice of Christ to all I meet. As Micah 6:8 says, I am challenged by the call ‘to act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with God.”
Dorothy was an active member of the Sparkill Dominican Associates, even in her later years. She felt enriched by knowing the Associates and Sisters and being involved in their prayer life and shared ministry.
Visitation will be held at Kutis Affton Chapel, 10151 Gravois Road, St. Louis, MO, on Friday, May 24 from 10:00 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
