1980 – Congregational Corporate Stances
1980 – Congregational Corporate Stances
Project Description

In 1980, the Sisters publish the first of many corporate stances with the purpose of bringing attention to issues of peace and justice in light of the gospel mandate. This first corporate stance supports the call to halt the nuclear arms race. In 1986, congregationally owned properties in NY and MO are declared Nuclear Free Zones, an area that prohibits the storage or transport of nuclear weapons. Future stances addressed issues such as military aid to El Salvador, human rights in Northern Ireland, unjust U.S. immigration policies, the Sanctuary Movement, military spending, violence, human trafficking, and a call to mitigate the effects of climate change, including education, advocacy, and changes in lifestyle.
