Women Making a Difference

Hands off Rally, Rockland

Last week, Representative Michal Lawler of District 17 held a town hall meeting.  Prior to that meeting Sisters gathered with many others to support a federal budget that fully supports Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP. During his town hall meeting, he promised to” never vote for legislation that does.” Meanwhile, Congress is considering significant cuts to these programs. We believe it is important to hold our legislators to their promises.

The Catholic Health Association (CHA) supported by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious and NETWORK, the Catholic Social Justice lobby, strongly support fully funding Medicaid and they have shared why this support is so necessary, so important.

  • Medicaid makes it possible for 1 in 5 Americans to access affordable medical coverage
  • 63% of nursing home residents have Medicaid
  • 49% of American children have Medicaid
  • 44% of non-elderly disabled Americans have Medicaid
  • 41% of all births in America are covered by Medicaid

No one should choose between getting the health care they need and paying for rent, gas, or groceries. Medicaid provides peace of mind to individuals and families and allows them to get the care they need without the fear of catastrophic bills and medical debt.

The budget reconciliation bill presently being debated in the House of Representatives would significantly cut the allocation for services that impact the lives of the most vulnerable, the economically poorest among us. It is almost impossible to imagine what our healthcare system will look like if these cuts are included in the final budget.

We share with you the recording and the slide deck, which will clearly indicate the moral imperative to keep Medicaid healthy. Recording and slide deck from CHA briefing.
