Sister Annette Marie Carney, OP, of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York, died on December 5, 2013. Born in the New York City on June 9, 1933, Dorothy was the daughter of George and Anne McBride Carney. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 7, 1952 and became known as Sister Annette Marie, professing her first vows in 1954 and her final vows in 1959.
Sister Annette Marie earned a BA in Education from Fordham University and her Catechetical Certification from Dunwoodie Seminary, NY. Sister Annette Marie was an elementary school teacher and served in the Archdiocese of New York and the Dioceses of Syracuse and Brooklyn. She taught at St. Paul, Norwich, NY (1954-60); St. Pius X, Scarsdale, NY (1960-66); St. Teresa, Woodside, NY (1966-70) and St. Paul, Valley Cottage (1970-82). From 1982-2001 Sister Annette Marie became a full time Director of Religious Education at St. Paul, Valley Cottage. She had served in this capacity as an extra time ministry while teaching at St. Paul’s. From 2001-2005 she was a remedial reading teacher at the elementary school. When she retired in 2005 she offered local community service at Dominican Convent as the sacristan of Sacred Heart Chapel; as a tutor at the Dominican Learning Center and assisted in the Spirit Alive program for our sisters. In 2009 she became a resident in Siena Hall, and it was there that she died peacefully on December 5, 2013.
Sister Annette Marie is predeceased by her parents and eight siblings. She is survived by her sister Rita Pollman (Henry) of Islip Terrace, NY; her sister-in-law Jacqueline Carney of Port Jefferson, NY and many nieces and nephews. Sister Annette Marie was an educator who taught for twenty years. She served as a Director of Religious Education for twenty-five years and was very involved in the life of the parish. She enjoyed her band “get togethers” and enjoyed a good time with them. She was faithful to the God she served for sixty-one years. We thank God for her life and her goodness. May the Lord shine His light upon her and give her eternal rest in the kingdom of heaven.
