Sister Carolyn Bell, OP died on February 8, 2020 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY. She was 89 years old.
Born in Jennings, MO on November 15, 1930 Loretta Carolyn was the daughter of Harold and Loretta Karcher Bell. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1949 and received the name Sister Mary Carolyn. She professed her first vows in 1951 and final vows in 1956.
Sister Carolyn received a BS in Education from Webster College, St Louis, MO, 1959; she attended St. Louis University for Religious Studies, 1974; and earned CPE units from St. Mary’s Health Center.
Sister Carolyn ministered at Cardinal McCloskey Home and School, White Plains, NY (1951-1952); in St. Louis, MO at St. James the Greater School (1952-1957,1966-1968, 1970-1975); Little Flower School (1957-1966); and Holy Redeemer School (1969-1970). From 1968-1969, Sr. Carolyn taught at St. Catherine School, Binghamton, NY. From 1975-2002, Sister Carolyn served in pastoral ministry in St. Louis, MO: Maria Fonte Monastery (1975-1976); St. Mark Parish (1976-1978); St. Joseph Hospital (1978-1979); St. Louis State Hospital (1979-1980); St. Joseph Hospital (1980-1987); Our Lady of the Snows Apartment Community, Belleville, IL (1987-1991); DePaul Health Center (1991-1997); and St. John Mercy Medical Center (1997-2002).
Sister Carolyn was predeceased by her parents Harold and Loretta Karcher Bell, her sister Mary, her nephew Rich, and her niece Cindy. She is survived by her brothers Joseph (Marilyn), Alexis (Helen – deceased), her sister Patricia Kelley, and several nieces and nephews.
Sister Carolyn Bell made a difference in the lives of countless children and adults in her educational and pastoral ministry. She served her God and congregation faithfully for more than 70 years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life, her presence, and her commitment as she is welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence. Sister Carolyn Bell will be remembered by her Dominican Sisters, Associates, colleagues and all who were touched by her life. Well done, good and faithful servant, Sister Carolyn.
