Sister Cecilia Ann Flynn, OP

Sister Cecilia Ann Flynn, OP died on April 16, 2020 in Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY. She was 90 years old

Born in New York City on March 9, 1930, Teresa was the daughter of Michael and Sarah Hyland Flynn. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on February 8, 1948 and received the name Sister Cecilia Ann. She professed her first vows in 1949 and final vows in 1954.

Sister Cecilia Ann received a BS in Education from Fordham University, Bronx, NY in 1960; and an MS in Religious Education from Fordham University in 1970. She earned Administration credits from Fordham University, 1973.

Sister Cecilia Ann’s many years of ministry in education included serving at Cardinal McCloskey Home and School, White Plains, NY (1949-1958); St. Catherine of Siena School, New York, NY (1958-1960); Holy Family School, Hicksville, NY (1960-1967); Our Lady of Grace School, Bronx, NY (1967-1968); Principal, St. Catherine Laboure School, Lake Katrine, NY (1968-1973); Principal, St. Brendan School, Bronx, NY (1973-1977); Aquinas High School, Bronx, NY (1977-1984). From 1984 until 1989, Sister Cecilia was the staff organizer at the Crotona Community Coalition before becoming the housing specialist at Thorpe Family Residence, Bronx, NY (1989-2005). From 2005 until 2007, Sr. Cecilia Ann worked to assist seniors living in the Belmont section of the Bronx.

Sister Cecilia Ann is predeceased by her parents Michael and Sarah Hyland Flynn and her brother, Bernard. She is survived by her sisters Sr. Florence Mary Flynn, OP, Barbara Larrea (Leo), Genevieve Murphy (Charles-deceased) and brother Joseph Hyland (Lisa) along with several nieces and nephews.

Sister Cecilia Ann touched the lives of countless people in her teaching ministry and her ministry in housing. She was committed to the mission of the Dominican Sisters for more than 72 years, proclaiming the word of God through ministry for justice. May she be welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence—well done good and faithful servant, Sister Cecilia Ann Flynn.
