Sister Diane Kane, OP

Sister Diane Kane, OP, of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on December 14, 2025 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent, Sparkill. She was 91 years old. Mary Ellen Kane was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on April 25, 1934, the daughter of John and Agnes Langton Kane. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1952, and received the name Sister Diane. Sister Diane professed her first vows in 1954 and her final vows in 1959.

Sister Diane received a BA in Education from Webster College, St. Louis, MO, in 1961, and an MA in Spanish Literature from St. Louis University in 1971.

Sister Diane ministered at Holy Redeemer School, St. Louis, MO (1954-1959); St. Elizabeth School, St. Louis, MO (1959-1964); St. Mark High School, St. Louis, MO (1964-1971); student at Aquinas Institute of Theology, Dubuque, IA, (1971-1972); Director of Formation, Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, NY (1972-1975); Pastoral Care ministry, St. Elizabeth Parish, New York, NY (1975-1983); Chaplain, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Belleville, IL (1983-1990); Case Manager at St. Patrick Center, St. Louis, MO (1990- 2001); St. Louis Regional (1999-2005); and Elder Care ministry for the Sisters of St. Joseph, St. Louis (2005-2011).

Sister Diane is predeceased by her parents, John and Agnes Langton Kane, and is survived by her sisters, Sister Kathleen Kane, OP, and Geraldine Brown (John), as well as her brothers, Michael (Mary) and Eugene (Johanna), and her beloved nieces, nephews, Dominican Sisters, Associates, and friends.

Sister Diane Kane made a difference in the lives of countless people through her ministry of education, pastoral ministry, chaplaincy, and formation. She exemplified the mission of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill to proclaim the Word of God through ministry of justice and reverence for all creation. May she be welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence-well done, good and faithful servant, Sister Diane Kane! Rest in Peace!
