Sister Dolores Fischer, OP of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on January 8, 2024, in St. John’s Riverside Hospital. She was 88 years old and in her 69th year of religious life.
Born in the Bronx, NY on December 8, 1935, Dolores Frances was the daughter of Edward and Rosemary McHugh Fischer. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1955 and received the name Sister Francis Edward. She professed her first vows in 1957 and final vows in 1962.
Sister Dolores earned a BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, 1960, and an MS in Business Education from Hunter College, NYC, 1976.
Sister Dolores began her teaching ministry at St. Catherine of Siena School, NYC (1957-1957); St. Joseph School, Bronx, NY (1957-1963); St. Helena School, Bronx, NY (1963-1964); Our Lady of Grace School (1964-1967); St. Brendan School, Bronx, NY (1967-1968 and 1971-1973); Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Scarsdale, NY (1968-1971); St. Edmund Prep HS, Brooklyn NY (1973-1997 as teacher and 1997-2009 as librarian).
Sister Dolores is predeceased by her parents Edward and Rosemary McHugh, her brother Edward, and her aunt, Sister Mary Annette McHugh, OP. She is survived by her nephew Scott and wife Kelly, grandnephews, Dominican Sisters, Associates, and friends.
Sister Dolores made a difference in the lives of countless children and families in her ministry of education, especially her caring presence at St. Edmund HS for 36 years. She lived the mission of the Dominican Sisters to proclaim the reign of God through ministry for justice and reverence for all creation. May she be welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence—well done, good and faithful servant, Sister Dolores Fischer. May you rest in Peace!
