Sister Eileen Guinan OP of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on January 10, 2023 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent, NY. She was 83 years old and in her 65th year of religious life.
Born in New York on September 20, 1940, Eileen was the daughter of Matthew and Margaret Glynn Guinan. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1958 and received the name Sister Regina Margaret. She professed first vows in 1960 and final vows in 1965.
Sister Eileen received a BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY, 1963; and an MS in Education, City College of New York NY, 1974.
Sister Eileen’s ministry of education included St. Agnes Home and School, Sparkill, NY (1960-1962, 1968-1972); St. John Chrysostom, Bronx, NY (1962-1964, 1976-2007 and 2007-2013 as Board of Education tutor); St. Catherine, Binghamton, NY (1964-1968); and St. Dominic, Blauvelt, NY (1972-1976). In 1999, Sister Eileen was recognized by the Bronx District Superintendent of Schools of the Archdiocese of New York for her 25 years of dedicated service to the children of St. John Chrysostom School.
Sister Eileen is predeceased by her parents Matthew and Margaret Glynn Guinan and her sisters, Maureen and Sister Margaret Guinan, RJM.
Sister Eileen made a difference in the lives of so many in her ministry of education—students, parents, and colleagues—for more than 60 years. We thank God for Sister Eileen’s life in community and pray that she will enjoy the fullness of God’s presence. Her Dominican Sisters, Associates, family, friends and all she served in ministry will miss her joyful presence. Rest in peace, good and faithful servant, Sister Eileen Guinan.
