Sister Elizabeth Anthony Gatto, OP

Sister Elizabeth Anthony Gatto OP of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on January 7, 2023 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY. She was 92 years old.

Born in New York City September 13, 1930, Lucille Florence was the daughter of Anthony and Julia Fregelette Gatto. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8,1949 and received the name Sister Elizabeth Anthony. She professed her first vows in 1951 and final vows in 1956.

Sister Elizabeth Anthony received a BS in Education from Fordham University, NY, 1959.

Sister Elizabeth Anthony began her ministry at Cardinal Mccloskey Home, White Plains, NY (1951-1952, childcare,1969-1971, teacher). She taught at the following schools: St. Catherine of Siena, NYC (1952-1958); St. Anthony, Bronx, NY (1958-1960, 1971-1975); St. Columba, Chester, NY (1960-1967); St. Teresa, Woodside, NY (1967-1969); St. James, Carmel, NY (1975-1986); Transfiguration, Tarrytown, NY (1986-1987); St. Paul, Valley Cottage, NY (1987-1990); and Assumption, Peekskill, NY (1990-2006).

Sister Elizabeth Anthony is predeceased by her parents Anthony and Julia Fregelette Gatto, her brother Anthony and brother-in-law John. She is survived by her sister, Kathryn Tracy and loving nephews and nieces.

Through her ministry of education as teacher, Sister Elizabeth Anthony touched the lives of countless-students, parents, colleagues. She was committed to the mission of the Dominican Sisters for more than 70 years, proclaiming the Word of God through Ministry for Justice. May she be welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence.
