Sister Elizabeth Thérèse Hurteau, OP

Sister Elizabeth Thérèse Hurteau of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on July 19, 2024 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent, Sparkill. Sister was 92 years old and in her 73rd year of religious life.

Born in New York City on August 27, 1931, Joan Marie was the daughter of Albert and Marie Cook Hurteau. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8,1951, and received the name Sister Elizabeth Thérèse. She professed her first vows in 1953 and final vows in 1958.

Sister Elizabeth Thérèse received a BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY, 1961.

Sister Elizabeth Thérèse’s ministries included St. Mary School, Fulton, NY (1953-1958); St. Anthony School, Bronx, NY (1958-1959); St. Martin of Tours School, Bronx, NY (1959-1967); St. Catherine Laboure School, Lake Katrine, NY (1967-1969); St. Gregory Barbarigo School, Garnerville, NY (1969-1979); St. Helena Elementary School, Bronx, NY (1979-1992); Medical Office Receptionist (1992-1993); Dominican Convent Office of Financial Services staff (1994-2010); and Receptionist, Dowling Gardens, Sparkill, NY (2010-2014).

Sister Elizabeth Thérèse is predeceased by her parents Albert and Marie Cook Hurteau and her brother Richard. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Carol, nieces and nephews and their families.

Sister Elizabeth Thérèse Hurteau made a difference in the lives of countless children and colleagues in her teaching and administrative ministries. She served her God and congregation faithfully as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life and commitment as she is welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence. Well done, good and faithful servant, Sister Elizabeth Thérèse Hurteau, OP! May you rest in peace!
