Sister Margaret McCann, OP, of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York, died on, February 6, 2014 in Siena Hall, Sparkill, NY. Born in New York City on March 7, 1933, Margaret Mary was the daughter of James and Margaret Barry McCann. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1950 and became known as Sister Dolores Patrice, professing her first vows in 1952 and her final vows in 1957.
Sister Margaret earned a BS in Education from Fordham University and an MS in Child Development from the University of Pittsburgh. Sister was an elementary school teacher and child care supervisor/teacher. She served in the Archdiocese of New York and the dioceses of Syracuse and Brooklyn.
She was a teacher at St. John Chrysostom, Bronx, NY (1952-54 & 64-66); St. Paul, Norwich, NY (1954-56); St. Teresa, Woodside, NY (1956-59); St. Catherine, Binghamton, NY (1959-64); St. Rose of Lima, New York, NY (1966-68); St. Agnes, Sparkill, NY (1968-70); Cardinal McCloskey, White Plains, NY (1972-74); Children’s Village, Dobbs Ferry, NY (1975-80); director of the Pre-School Program at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY (1980-95); and St. Teresa of Avila Montessori Program, N. Tarrytown, NY (1995-96). Upon retirement Sister Margaret offered local community service at Dominican Convent’s switchboard, welcoming and greeting visitors. She became a resident of Siena Hall in 2012.
Sister Margaret is predeceased by her parents and her brother James. She is survived by her many friends.
Sister Margaret was committed to the field of education for forty-four years. She enjoyed life, had a wonderful sense of humor and always greeted you with her friendly smile. She was faithful to the God she loved and to the life she chose as a Dominican sister. We are grateful for her sixty-three years in the congregation and thank God for her life and her goodness. May the Lord shine his light upon her and give her eternal rest in the kingdom of heaven.
