Sister Margaret Murphy, OP, of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on January 31, 2018 in Dominican Convent’s Siena Hall, Sparkill, NY.
Born in New York, NY on June 1, 1947, Margaret was the daughter of John and Alice Lynch Murphy. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on August 30, 1965 and received the name Sister John Magdalene. She professed her first vows in 1967 and her final vows in 1972.
Sister Margaret Murphy received her BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY 1972; her MST in Mathematics from Fordham University, Bronx, NY 1976; and a MS in Computer Science from Pace University, White Plains, NY 1986.
During her eighteen years in education, Sr. Margaret Murphy served in the Archdiocese of New York at St. Agnes Home and School, Sparkill (1967-1968); Sacred Heart School, Monroe (1969-1974) and Albertus Magnus High School, Bardonia (1974-1985). Upon completion of her studies in computer science in 1986, Sr. Margaret worked as a programmer at the Diocese of Rockville Centre. She then served as Director of Computer Services from 1987-1989 at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville. From 1989 to 1994 Sr. Margaret was a financial programmer and analyst for an insurance service in Pearl River, NY. Sister Margaret served in Congregational Leadership beginning in 1994, directing the Office of Information Services until 2000. After a sabbatical year, Sr. Margaret became the Finance Officer at the Leviticus 25:23 Alternative Fund, a position she held for almost 16 years.
Sister Margaret Murphy is predeceased by her parents John and Alice Lynch Murphy. She is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Charlotte (Thomas) Murray and Alice Theresa (Ronald) Chanda along with her niece and nephews, grandniece and grandnephews.
Sister Margaret Murphy was a kind and compassionate woman who made a difference in the lives of those who knew her. She served her God and congregation faithfully for more than fifty-two years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life and her goodness and we pray she be brought swiftly into the fullness of joy in the presence of the God she loved and so faithfully served. We will miss her presence among us.
