Sister Margaret Rose Moran, OP

Sister Margaret Rose Moran, OP, of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on December 24, 2017 in Dominican Convent’s Siena Hall, Sparkill, NY.

Born in New York, NY on January 18, 1929 Catherine Margaret was the daughter of John and Margaret Logan Moran. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1949 and received the name Sister Margaret Rose. She professed her first vows in 1951 and her final vows in 1956.

Sister Margaret Rose received her BS in Elementary Education in 1956 and her MSW in Social Work in 1972 both from Fordham University, New York.

Sister Margaret Rose served in the Archdiocese of New York as a teacher in Sacred Heart School, Suffern (1951-1956) and St. Pius X School, Scarsdale (1956-1958). In 1958, Sr. Margaret responded to the invitation from the Dominican Fathers to establish missions in the Republic of Pakistan. For thirty years she served as administrator, teacher, and formation director in Loreto and Bahawalpur. In 1970, Sr. Margaret returned to New York to study at Fordham University to obtain her MSW degree (1972) then ministered for one year at Cardinal McCloskey before returning to Pakistan in 1973 to serve as a social worker in Loreto and Multan. For a period of six months, Sr. Margaret served as a social work field supervisor in a refugee camp in Thailand. In 1990, Sr. Margaret left her beloved Pakistan to return to the United States. From 1990-1994, Margaret served as a social worker at Cardinal McCloskey before becoming the Child Care Coordinator at Incarnation Children’s Center in New York (1994-1996). From 1996-2004, Margaret worked at both Encore Community Services and St. Rita Center as a social worker and teacher and continued her ministry at Encore Community Services until 2015.

Sister Margaret Rose is predeceased by her parents John and Margaret Logan Moran, her brother Thomas Moran, and sister Mary Thompson. She is survived by her brother John and sister-in-law Cathy.

Sister Margaret Rose Moran was a kind and compassionate person. She served her God and congregation faithfully for over sixty-eight years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life and her goodness and we pray she be brought swiftly into the fullness of joy in the presence of the God she loved and so faithfully served. We will miss her presence among us.
