Sister Marie Daugherty, OP of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on December 9, 2024, in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent. Sister was 103 years old and in her 87th year of religious life.
Born in Richwoods, MO, on January 26, 1921, Margaret Mary was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Ellen DeClue Daugherty. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on July 16, 1938, and received the name Sister Marie. She professed her first vows in 1940 and final vows in 1945.
Sister Marie received a BS in Music Education from Webster University, MO in 1948;
an MA in Music Education from DePaul University, MO in 1963; and Certification in Administration from St. Louis University in 1965.
Sister Marie’s ministries included: St. Agnes Home & School, Sparkill, NY (teacher/music director/liturgist, 1938-1941, 1947-1951); St. Mark Elementary and HS, St. Louis, MO (teacher, 1941-1947, principal, 1965-1975); Epiphany of Our Lord School, St. Louis, MO (1951-1954); Holy Rosary Elementary and HS, Monroe City, MO (1954-1965); music teacher at DeAndreis Catholic Boys HS, St. Louis, MO (1975-1976); Lordship of Jesus Foundation, Editor (1976-1978); St. Pius X Abbey Pax Publications, Editor (1978-1980); Pastoral Associate St. Mark Parish (1975-1980); Coordinator, Merton House, St; Louis, MO (1980-1983); Archdiocese of St. Louis Office of Charismatic Renewal (Leadership Formation, 1983-1990, pastoral ministry, 1990-1999, volunteer, 1999-2003); and Pastoral Associate, St. Cronan Parish, St. Louis, MO (1990-1992).
Sister Marie was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Mary Ellen and her siblings Francis, Patricia, Lucy, Michael, Cecil, Thomas, Helen, J. Glennon, and James. She is survived by her beloved brother Joseph, nieces, nephews, grandnieces/nephews, relatives, Dominican Sisters, Associates, and friends.
Sister Marie’s presence enriched the lives of countless people in her ministry of music, pastoral leadership, teaching, administration, and preaching the Gospel in all her ministries, especially to the most vulnerable. She lived the mission of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, proclaiming the Word of God through the ministry of justice and reverence for all creation. May Sister Marie be welcomed into God’s presence with joyful music. Well done, good and faithful servant, Sister Marie Daugherty; you have blessed our lives! May you rest in Peace!
