Sister Marie Murphy, OP, of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill, New York, died on November 21, 2015 in Siena Hall, Sparkill, NY.
Born in the Bronx, NY on June 15, 1927, Marie was the daughter of Michael and Marie Green Murphy. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1948 and received the name Sister Rose Michael. She professed her first vows in 1950 and her final vows in 1955.
Sister Marie earned a BS in Education, St. John University, 1956 and a MS in Mathematics, St. John University, 1960.
Sister Marie was a teacher, principal and Coordinator of Religious Education and ministered in the Archdiocese of NY and the dioceses of Syracuse and Brooklyn. She taught at St. Mary, Fulton, NY (1950-51); St. Mary Magdalene, Springfield Gardens, NY (1951-60); Albertus Magnus HS, Bardonia, NY (1960-62); St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY (1962-71) and St. Anthony School, Nanuet, NY (2002-04). She was principal at St. Ann, Bronx, NY (1971-78); Sacred Heart, Monroe, NY (1978-85) and Regina Coeli, Hyde Park, NY (1985-91). From 1992-2002 Sister Marie was the CRE at St. Catherine Parish in Blauvelt, NY. Sister Marie remained active after her retirement and volunteered at Thorpe Senior Center and in the Spirit Alive program at the Motherhouse.
Sister Marie is survived by her niece Jean Morrissey (Robert), Vernon, NJ and her nephew Michael Murphy (Oneida), Carmel, NY. She will be missed by her grandnieces and grandnephews, Timothy, Alyssa, Antoinette and Antoin.
Sister Marie was faithful to the God she loved and to the life she chose as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We will remember her for her commitment in the field of education and the difference she made in the lives of her students. We thank God for her life and her goodness. May the Lord shine His light upon her and welcome her into the company of the saints forever.
