Sister Mary Louise Twomey, OP, of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on November 5, 2016 in Siena Hall, Sparkill, NY.
Born in Brooklyn, NY on June 26, 1932, Jean Ann was the daughter of Frank and Louise Sommer Twomey. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 7, 1952 and received the name Sister Mary Louise. She professed her first vows in 1954 and her final vows in 1959.
Sister Mary Louise received a BS in Education, Fordham University, New York in 1960 and her MS in Pastoral Ministry from Fordham University in 1987.
Sister Mary Louise was a teacher in the Archdiocese of NY at St. John Chrysostom School, New York (1954-59) and St. Rose of Lima School, New York (1959-61). In 1961 Sr. Mary Louise went to Pakistan where she ministered to the Pakistani people as a teacher in Dominican Convent School (1961-64); St. Dominic Urdu School (1964-66) and in Loreto (1966-70). From 1970-71, Sister attended Atenao University in Manila, Philippines, then returned to Pakistan and from 1971-81was at the Pastoral Institute- Multan teaching and giving leadership training to catechists and Junior Professed Sisters and Novices. From 1981-1986 Sister ministered to the Pakistani people in the Diocese of Multan. Upon her return to the United States, Sister Mary Louise served as Pastoral Minister at St. John’s Parish, Bronx, NY (1988-98) and was the Project Manager at Thorpe Village, Sparkill, NY (1998-2013) before retiring to Dominican Convent.
Sister Mary Louise is predeceased by her parents Frank and Louise Sommer Twomey. She is survived by her sister Virginia (William) Corey and her brother Francis (Rosemary) Twomey. She will be missed by her nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.
Sister Mary Louise was a very loving, kind and caring person. She served her God and congregation faithfully for sixty-four years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill. We thank God for her life and her goodness and we pray she be brought swiftly into the fullness of joy in the presence of the God she loved and so faithfully served. We will miss her presence among us.
