Sister Maureen Massett, OP

Sister Maureen Massett, OP died on June 18, 2021, in Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York. She was 84 years old.

Born in New York City on September 23, 1936, Maureen was the daughter of Arthur and Agnes Ryan Massett. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1956 and received the name Sister Marian Loretta. She professed first vows in 1958 and final vows in 1963.

Sister Maureen received a BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY, 1960; and an MA in History from Manhattan College, Bronx, NY, 1972.

Sister Maureen taught in St. Agnes Home and School, Sparkill, NY (1958-1959); St. John Chrysostom School, Bronx, NY (1959-1960); St. Mary School, Fulton, NY (1960-1967); St. Theresa School, Bronx, NY (1967-1969); Aquinas High School, Bronx, NY (1969-1976); and Rosary Academy, Sparkill, NY (1976-1980). From 1980-2013, Sister Maureen served as Finance Manager at Thorpe Village, Sparkill, NY. She was one of the original staff members of Thorpe Housing and was a licensed Real Estate Broker. In 2010 Sister Maureen was inducted into the St. Thomas Aquinas College Hall of Fame on the 50th Anniversary of the Class of 1960.

Sister Maureen is predeceased by her parents Arthur and Agnes Ryan Massett and her siblings Edward Egan, Danny Crowley, Arthur Massett, and Joan Crowley Sulzer. She is survived by her sister Patricia Crowley and several nieces and nephews.    Sister Maureen made a difference in the lives of so many in her ministry of education—students, parents, and colleagues. She used her financial acumen at Thorpe Village in ministry to the residents of this senior housing complex. We thank God for Sister Maureen’s life in community, and we pray that she will now enjoy the fullness of God’s presence. Her Dominican Sisters, Associates, family, and all she served in ministry will miss her presence. Rest in peace, good and faithful servant, Sister Maureen Massett, OP.
