Sister Noreen Nolan, OP

Sister Noreen Nolan, OP, died on February 6, 2011, in Siena Hall, Sparkill, NY. Born in New York City March 19, 1947, Noreen Ann was the daughter of Edward and Theresa Tierney Nolan. Noreen entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1964, and became known as Sister Marie Eymard, professing her first vows in 1966 and final vows in 1974.

Sister Noreen earned a BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkill, NY; an MS in Reading from William Paterson College, Wayne, NJ and Administration certification from Manhattan College, NY. During her professional life, Sister Noreen was an elementary school teacher and principal in the Archdiocese of NY. She taught at St. Anthony, Bronx, NY (1967-68); St. Theresa, Bronx, NY (1968-69); Sacred Heart, Suffern, NY (1969-78); St. Augustine, New City, NY (1978-81); New Hope Manor, Garrison, NY (1981-82); St. John Chrysostom, Bronx, NY (1982-84); She served as principal at Our Lady of Good Council in Manhattan, NY from 1984-89 and was principal for 22 years at St. Elizabeth’s in Manhattan, NY from 1989 to the present. Sister Noreen is predeceased by her mother Theresa Nolan, her aunts, Sr. Mary Serena, RSM, and Sr. Elizabeth Tierney, RSM. She is survived by her father Frank Nolan of Jackson Heights, NY; her sister Virginia Ripp (Joseph) of Wilton CT; her nephews Brendan Ripp (Kristy) of Wilton, CT and Daniel (Kelly) of Charlotte, NC; her grandnephew Nolan and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

We have been blessed with Noreen’s life among us. We will remember her as an innovative educator and a leader in the peacemaking efforts for her students in the Washington Heights area where St. Elizabeth’s School is located. Noreen has been recognized for her outstanding leadership qualities and in 1999 she received the Distinguished Principals Award from NCEA. We celebrate her life of 63 years and ask the good Lord to bless her. May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.
