Sister Patricia Broderick, OP, Dominican Sister, Sparkill, New York, died on February 14, 2026, at Albert Einstein Hospital, Bronx, NY. She was 86 years old. Born in New York City on October 2, 1939, Patricia Ann was the daughter of Patrick and Margaret Daly Broderick. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 7, 1958, and received the name Sister Margaret Patrice; she professed first vows in 1960 and final vows in 1965.
Sister Patricia received a BS in Science from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY, 1963; an MS in Biology from Fordham University, NY, 1970; a PhD in Pharmacology from St. John University, NY, 1979. Her studies also included pre-doctoral studies at Nathan Kline Psychiatric Institute (1975-1976); and postdoctoral studies and research in neuroscience at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1981-1985).
Sister Patricia’s early ministries in education included St. Rose of Lima School, NYC (1962-1963); St. Joseph School, Bronx, NY (1963-1966); Cathedral High School, NYC (1966-1973); Msgr. Scanlan HS, Bronx, NY (1973-1975); and adjunct professor at St. Thomas Aquinas College (1974) and the College of New Rochelle, NY (1975). Upon completion of her studies at St. John University, Sister Patricia served as a senior scientist at USV Pharmaceutical Corp (1979-1982); a consultant and researcher at Pharmacia Upjohn Pharmaceuticals Company (1982-1988); and Medical Professor of Physiology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, CUNY (1986-2026). Sister Patricia was recognized with numerous lifetime achievement awards for her contributions to medicine in the fields of physiology, pharmacology, and neuroscience.
Sister Patricia was predeceased by her parents, Patrick and Margaret and her sister Julia Marie O’Brien. She is survived by nieces and nephews and their families, colleagues, Dominican Sisters, Associates, and friends.
Sister Patricia made a significant difference in the lives of many as a teacher at the elementary, secondary, and university levels, and through her outstanding contributions to medical science as a teacher and researcher. She exemplified a deep commitment to the Dominican pillars of study and service. We thank God for Sister Patricia and pray that she is welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence. Rest in peace, good and faithful servant, Sister Patricia Broderick. May God hold you in the hollow of His hands!
