Sister Sheila Gorham, OP

Sister Sheila Gorham OP of the Dominican Sisters, Sparkill, New York, died on March 27, 2023 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York. Sister was 85 years old and in her 65th year of religious life.

Born in Yonkers, New York on July 17, 1937, Sheila was the daughter of Joseph and Cecilia McDonagh Gorham. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8,1958 and received the name Sister Joseph Cecilia. She professed first vows in 1960 and final vows in 1965.

Sister Sheila received a BS in Education from Fordham University, New York, 1966; and an MA in History from Manhattan College, Bronx, NY, 1972.

Sister Sheila began her ministry of education at St. Rose Settlement, NYC (1960-1962); St. Catherine of Siena School, NYC (1962-1964); St. Martin of Tours School, Bronx, NY (1964-1969); St. Madeleine Sophie School, Schenectady, NY (1969-1970); St. Helena Elementary School, Bronx, NY (1970-1972); St. John Chrysostom School, Bronx, NY (1972-1994 as teacher and 1994-2013 as Assistant Principal). From 2013-2014 Sister Sheila volunteered at Jeanne Jugan Residence, Bronx, NY.

Sister Sheila is predeceased by her parents Joseph and Cecilia McDonagh Gorham and her brother John. She is survived by her sister JoAnn Leahy, husband Thomas and sister-in-law Eileen Gorham and nieces and nephews.

Sister Sheila made a difference in the lives of so many in her ministry of education—students, parents, and colleagues, and especially at St. John Chrysostom School where she ministered for 40 years. We thank God for Sister Sheila’s life in community and pray for her as she is welcomed into the fullness of God’s presence. Her Dominican Sisters, Associates, family, friends and all whom she served in ministry will miss her presence. Rest in peace, good and faithful servant, Sister Sheila Gorham. May the road rise up to meet you…and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand!
