Sister Suzanne Laughlin, OP died on July 8, 2019 at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. She was 81 years old.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 4, 1938, Suzanne Marie was the daughter of Oliver and Catherine Hickey Laughlin. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1956 and received the name Sister James Catherine. She professed her first vows in 1958 and her final vows in 1963.
Sister Suzanne received her BA in English from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY, 1961.
Sister Suzanne taught in the following schools in the New York; Rockville Centre and Syracuse Dioceses: St. Rose of Lima, NYC (1958-1961); Holy Family, Hicksville, NY (1961-1962); St. Mary, Fulton, NY (1962-1964). Sister Suzanne returned to St. Louis and taught at St. Elizabeth, Crestwood, MO (1964-1970); St. James, St. Louis, MO (1970-1980, teacher; 1980-1995, principal); St. Gerard Majella, Kirkwood, MO (1995-1996); St. Cecilia School (1996-2001, principal). From 2001-2012, Sister Suzanne served at St. Alexius Hospital in Volunteer Management in Recreation Therapy. She has resided in Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY since July 2017.
Sister Suzanne was predeceased by her parents, Oliver and Catherine Hickey Laughlin and her brothers Jim, Bill and Michael. She is survived by her siblings, Kathleen, Mary, Margaret, Patricia, Ann Marie, Robert, Maureen, John, and Colleen, their spouses, and her 28 nieces and nephews and 44 great nieces and great nephews.
Sister Suzanne Laughlin was a woman who made a difference in the lives of so many—students, parents, and colleagues. She was a teacher and administrator who served her God and congregation faithfully for 63 years as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill.We thank God for her life in community and pray she will enjoy the fullness of the presence of her God.
