Sister Theresa Angelo Girolamo, OP

Sister Theresa Angelo Girolamo, OP died on June 27, 2020 in Siena Hall, Dominican Convent, Sparkill, NY. She was 80 years old.

Born in Bronx, New York on June 30, 1939, Stella Constance was the daughter of Ralph and Stella Lukasewski Girolamo.

She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1958 and received the name Sister Theresa Angelo. She professed first vows in 1960 and final vows in 1965.

Sister Theresa Angelo earned a BS in Education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, Sparkill, NY, 1963, and an MNS in Earth Science from the University of Oklahoma, 1973.

Sister Theresa Angelo’s teaching ministry included: St. Agnes Home & School, Sparkill, NY (1958-1961); St. Catherine of Siena School, NYC (1961-1966); St. Paul, Norwich, NY (1966-1968); Holy Trinity HS, Hicksville, NY (1968-1978); St. Rose of Lima, NYC (1978-1983); and Aquinas HS, Bronx, NY (1983-1994). In 1994, Sister Theresa Angelo responded to the needs of immigrant families at St. Rita’s Center for Immigrant and Refugees Services, Bronx, NY, as Coordinator of the ESL State Program (1994-2005); Assistant Director (2005-2015); and Director (2015-2019).

She retired to Dominican Convent in 2019.

Sister Theresa Angelo is predeceased by her parents Ralph and Stella Lukasewski Girolamo. She is survived by her sister Amy Cammerato, her brothers Ralph and Vincent (Rosemary), and her beloved nieces and nephews and their children.

Sister Theresa Angelo touched the lives of countless children, teens and adults in her ministry of education and her ministry at St. Rita Center for Immigrant and Refugee Services. For more than 62 years, she proclaimed the reign of God through ministry for justice, particularly as she welcomed and assisted new immigrant and refugee families to our country. The Dominican Sisters thank God for her presence in our lives. Well done, good and faithful servant, Sister Theresa Angelo Girolamo.
