Sister Thérèse Tangney, OP

Sister Thérèse Tangney, OP died on May 7, 2019 in Montefiore Nyack Hospital, Nyack, NY. She was 92 years old.

The daughter of Nicholas and Teresa Whelan Tangney, Thérèse was born in New York, NY on April 5, 1927. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8,1953 and received the name Sister Gerald Thérèse. She professed her first vows in 1955 and final vows in 1960.

Sister Thérèse received her BA in History, 1950, Hunter College, New York, NY; MA in English,1963, Fordham University; MA in Liturgy, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, 1974.

Sister Thérèse taught in the Archdiocese of New York in Aquinas High School, Bronx, NY (1950-1953, 1956-1960); St. Joseph School, Bronx, NY (1955-1956); St. Helena School, Bronx, NY (1960-1962), Msgr. Scanlan HS (1966-1976); and served as Director of Religious Education, Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, Tuxedo, NY (1978-1980); and Chaplain and Office Assistant, Westchester Development & Disability Services(1980-1999). In the Brooklyn Diocese, she taught at St. Teresa School, Woodside, NY (1962-1966). Sr. Thérèse was a member of the Dominican Convent House of Prayer from 1976-1978 and provided support services at Dowling Gardens, Sparkill, NY from 2002-2011. She resided in Dominican Convent since 2009.

Sister Thérèse is predeceased by her parents Nicholas and Theresa Whelan Tangney and her siblings, Nicholas, Margaret D’Arcy, and Gerald. She is survived by her sister, Cora Tanner, sister-in-law Grace Tangney, and many nieces and nephews.

Sister Thérèse Tangney was a woman who made difference in the lives of the many students she taught as classroom teacher and in her pastoral ministry to the elderly and disabled. She proclaimed the Word of God as a Dominican Sister of Sparkill for 66 years. We thank God for her life in community and pray for her as she enters into the eternal presence of the God she faithfully served. We will miss her presence among us.
