Sister Una McCormack, OP, of Dominican Convent, Sparkill, New York, died on August 26, 2015 in Siena Hall, Sparkill, NY.
Born in New York City on June 12, 1924, Anne Teresa was the daughter of William and Winifred Kelly McCormack. She entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary in Sparkill on September 8, 1944 and received the name Sister Mary Una. She professed her first vows in 1946 and her final vows in 1951.
Sister Una earned a BS in Education, Fordham University, 1955 and a MSW in Social Work, Fordham University, 1959.
Sister Una ministered in the Archdiocese of NY as a teacher, social worker and administrator. She served as a secretary (1946-47) and then as Executive Director (1967-72) at Cardinal McCloskey Home, White Plains, NY; as a teacher at St. Ignatius Day Nursery, NYC (1949-51) and Thorpe Secretarial School, NYC
(1951-55). From 1972-2002 Sister Una served in two Executive positions. She was Executive Director of the Catholic Home Bureau, NYC (1972-2000) and Director of the Department of Child Care for Catholic Charities, NYC (1990-2002). She served on numerous Boards within the Archdiocese and was the recipient of many prestigious awards and commendations. She retired in 2002 from active ministry but continued to be a positive presence to her Sisters and the many friends who remained a part of her life.
Sister Una is predeceased by her parents William and Winfred McCormack and her brother Joseph McCormack. She is survived by her cousins Ellen Corwin (Steven), NYC; Kathleen Dempsey, Yonkers, NY; Maureen Lappatito (Robert), Eastchester, NY; Joan Dotto (Mario), Viera, FL and John Crehan (Joan), Bronx, NY. She will be missed by many cousins in County Clare, Ireland, her many colleagues in the Archdiocese of NY and her Dominican family, Sisters and Associates of Sparkill.
Sister Una was faithful to the God she loved and to the life she chose as a Dominican sister. We will remember her for her generous spirit, her devotion to children and their families, to her congregation and to the church. We are grateful for her seventy years in the congregation and we thank God for her life and her goodness. May the Lord shine his light upon her and give her eternal rest in the kingdom of heaven.
