Pilgrims and Preachers of Hope: A Call to Action

Jubilee 2025 logo

"Pope Francis has invited us to be Pilgrims of Hope during this Jubilee year. I suggest that we, as Dominicans, might also be Preachers of Hope. Let our voices be clear about what we value and the direction we set in 2022."
— Sr. Eileen Gannon, OP

Faithful to our Dominican charism, we remain committed to confronting the grave injustices of our time—racism, war, the exploitation of women and children, the exclusion of migrants, and all threats to peace.
— Dominican Sisters of Sparkill Chapter Direction Statement, 2022

To be pilgrims and preachers of hope today means to walk forward with courage and faith, despite the challenges and chaos around us. As we gathered for a Rosary for Peace, we held onto hope, grateful for the steps made toward peace and trusting these victories will grow. This is the essence of being a pilgrim—finding light in the darkness step by step.

The Jubilee logo embodies this journey of hope: four figures embracing in solidarity, with one holding the cross as a symbol of enduring hope. Beneath, turbulent waves swirl, but the cross transforms into an anchor, offering stability in times of crisis. The 2025 Jubilee Year motto, Peregrinantes in Spem (Pilgrims in Hope), calls us to move forward in faith, anchored in hope.

What do we wish for? A world where justice, peace, and respect for all reign, where we protect Earth, our common home.

What are we willing to do to make this a reality?

The global debt crisis demands our attention. Fifty-four countries, from Kenya to Sri Lanka, face immense debt distress, forcing them to divert resources from vital needs like healthcare and education to pay creditors. Despite repaying debts multiple times, they remain trapped in cycles of debt due to exploitative interest rates and unscrupulous lending practices.

This injustice must end. We must demand the cancellation of unfair debts, fight for financial systems that prioritize people over profit, and push for fairer laws.

Hope also shines in the resilience of everyday heroes—those who face hardship with courage and determination. Their perseverance inspires us. We find hope in those who stand beside them, offering a hand, a kind word, or much-needed support. Their solidarity reminds us that, even in dark times, hope persists. Together, we walk this journey, lifting each other.

Let us stand in solidarity with the world’s most vulnerable nations and fight for debt justice this Jubilee Year. Together, as pilgrims and preachers of hope, we can make a difference.
