The Dominican Institute for the Arts (DIA) is a grassroots collaboration of artists — Dominican Sisters, Friars, Laity and Associates — who are committed to Preaching through the Arts. The DIA held its annual meeting at Siena Retreat Center in Racine, WI from July 27-30, 2016. Their “Artists’ Spirit Flows” theme was particularly beautiful amidst the celebration of the 800th Anniversary of the Dominican Order.
We are excited to share that our Sr. Elizabeth Slenker was awarded the highest honor given by the DIA – The Fra Angelico Award. It is bestowed on those members who exemplify the dedication of famous Dominican Friar and artist, Fra Angelico, to furthering the Holy Preaching through art.
Sr. Elizabeth shared, “I want my work to emulate the virtues extolled in the life of Jesus… I have had extensive formal education opportunities but the blank white paper before me is possibly my greatest teacher, as what I put on it becomes a new life that will outlast me. In considering all the wonderful art of the past, this is a humbling thought.”
