Brother Norbert McAuliffe, SC, originally known as John McAuliffe, embarked on a remarkable journey to sainthood. His spiritual journey began when he and his brother William, orphaned at a young age, found refuge at St. Agnes Home for Children in Sparkill in 1895. At 16, John experienced a profound spiritual calling to join the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, adopting the name Norbert and professing his final vows in 1903. This early chapter in his life laid the groundwork for his future contributions.
He then launched into teaching, starting with the 60 first—and second-graders at St. Patrick’s School in Indianapolis. Over the following years, he earned his teaching license and a Bachelor of Science from Loyola University in New Orleans. Brother Norbert had a natural talent for teaching. He won his students’ confidence and shared interesting anecdotes during his lectures to keep their attention.
In religion class, he became transformed when he spoke about the love of God, and his sincere enthusiasm kept his pupils transfixed for Brother Norbert; everything related to God. Language helped humans communicate with God. Through geometry, he could find God everywhere. Biology and Chemistry showed God's creative power and warned humans of the destructive consequences of misusing it.
Brother Norbert McAuliffe's educational talents and missionary desire led him to Uganda, where he left an indelible mark. He established schools and became known for his deep spirituality, dedication to prayer, and compassionate care for the local community. His love for Jesus and genuine concern for others was evident in his every action, marking his time in Uganda as a period of selfless service and spiritual leadership.
During World War II, he returned to the U.S. to direct a formation center, where he nurtured spiritual growth among those he served. In 1946, he resumed his missionary work, further expanding educational opportunities and supporting local leadership in East Africa.
By his death in 1959, Brother Norbert had witnessed a significant growth in the mission, characterized by his lasting impact of compassion and prayer. Pope Francis declared him Venerable on May 19, 2018, and his legacy of spirituality and charitable service continues to thrive in Africa today.
