Celebrating a Living Legacy

Sr. Meg Sweeney

Today's readings speak with remarkable clarity to this occasion - one hundred and fifty years of Sparkill Dominican ministry and the joyful celebration of 32 women whose vowed lives have become living chapters in that story.

We read in Acts that the early Church is facing a crisis: the needs of the community of believers are growing, people are hungry, and the apostles cannot do everything themselves. So they discern, pray, and appoint new servants - ministers who will ensure that no one is forgotten.

This is the story of religious life; this is the story of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill. For one hundred and fifty years, we have stepped into the gaps where the world was hurting - schools that needed teachers, children who needed protection, immigrants who needed advocates, the sick who needed compassion, the poor who needed justice. Like those first ministers in Acts, we responded not with fear but with creativity, courage, and deep faith.

The psalmist reminds us that God's love is not abstract. It is steadfast, reliable, and embodied in people who trust in God's call. Our history is a testament to that love - expressed in classrooms, hospitals, social service centers, parishes, peace and justice ministries, and in the quiet, hidden acts of kindness. Our lives proclaim: "I know my Savior lives".

Today we honor women who have proclaimed that Good News for 50, 60, 65, 70, 75, and, yes, even 80 years. We celebrate the 2,265 years of their faithful service. Their fidelity is not simply admirable - it is a sign of God's faithfulness to us.

And Peter - Peter gives us one of the most beautiful images in Scripture: "We are living stones, built into a spiritual house."

Our one hundred and fifty-year legacy is not built of brick and mortar. It is built of lives - women who prayed, taught, healed, challenged, comforted, and proclaimed the Gospel with their whole being. Each one of us is a living stone: Shaped by grace, strengthened by community. Placed by the Master Builder exactly where needed.

Together we form a house of mercy, a sanctuary of truth, a dwelling place of hope. And the Dominican charism - to praise, to bless, and to preach - is the mortar that holds it all together.

In the Gospel, Jesus speaks to the disciples who are anxious about the future. He tells them: "Do not let your hearts be troubled... I am the way." Religious life today faces its own uncertainties. The world is changing rapidly. Congregations are smaller. Ministries look different. But Jesus' words remain the anchor: "Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do...and even greater ones".

The Dominican Sisters of Sparkill have done “greater works” for one hundred and fifty years - not by their own power, but by the Spirit who called them, sustained them, and sent them. The 32 jubilarians we honor today are living proof that God is not finished yet.

Anniversaries are not only about looking back. They are about recognizing the grace that still flows, the mission that still calls, the Gospel that still needs to be preached.

The world needs the Dominican spirit more than ever:

  • a passion for truth in an age of confusion
  • a commitment to justice in a time of division
  • a heart for the vulnerable in a culture of indifference
  • a contemplative gaze in a world that rushes past mystery Our legacy is not a museum piece. It is a living

So today we give thanks:

  • For one hundred and fifty years of courageous women who said yes to God
  • For the countless lives touched by our ministries
  • For the jubilarians whose fidelity shines like a beacon of hope
  • For the Dominican family, associates, partners, and friends who continue the mission
  • And for the God who began this good work and will bring it to

May Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the Life continue to guide this Congregation. May the Spirit breathe new dreams into our hearts.

And may the Father, whose love endures forever, bless the next one hundred and fifty years with the same courage, compassion, and joy that have marked the first.

Happy Foundation Day!!
